Late Renewals Due January 15th

Monday, December 2, 2013 - 0 comments

CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) who failed to meet the October 31, 2013 renewal deadline have until January 15, 2014 to pay the $55 late fee and renew late.

CRTPs who do not renew by January 15th will be required to retake the 60-hour qualifying education course and register as a new tax preparer. Before the policy change, CRTPs had a one-year grace period to renew late.

The goal of the shortened deadline is to improve CRTP compliance. Last year CTEC received a number of phone calls from both consumers and the media regarding CRTPs who continued to do business with an expired registration. Those CRTPs were reported to the Franchise Tax Board.

The law is clear. Preparing tax returns without a current registration is against state law even if the CRTP plans to register late.

To renew, CRTPs must have…

• 20 hours of continuing education (10 hours federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours state) already uploaded into the CTEC database

• Proof of current bond

• Valid IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)

• Visa or MasterCard to pay the $55 late registration fee

To renew, go to the CTEC homepage and click on Preparer Registration and Personal Account.
