Don’t forget all CTEC registrations must be renewed online by midnight Thursday, October 31st. CTEC is no longer accepting registrations by mail.
CTEC staff is still getting phone calls from CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) who mistakenly believe CTEC registration is no longer required now that the IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) program has been suspended.
Please be advised that the federal court ruling to suspend the RTRP program has absolutely no impact on CTEC.
The IRS tax preparer program is completely independent of CTEC requirements. CTEC registration is still required by California law.
To renew online, CRTPs will need:
• 20 hours of completed continuing education (15 hours federal and 5 hours state). The hours must already be uploaded into the CTEC database.
• A valid IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).
• Current $5,000 surety bond.
• Visa or MasterCard to pay the $25 registration fee.
CTEC-approved education providers have 45 days from the date the course was completed to report the hours earned to CTEC; however, starting January 1, 2014, a new policy takes effect that only gives education providers ten days to report the education to CTEC. CRTPs cannot renew until the education provider has uploaded the hours into the CTEC database.
Failure to meet the October 31st renewal deadline will result in a $55 late fee. It is strongly recommended CRTPs complete their 20 hours of continuing education no later than October 15th to avoid paying the late fee.
According to California law, CRTPs cannot prepare tax returns for a fee until their registration is current with CTEC.
CRTPs who miss the October 31st deadline have until January 15, 2014 to renew late. Failure to meet the late renewal deadline will result in an expired CTEC registration. It means those CRTPs will have to re-take the 60 hours of qualifying education, pass a final exam from an approved education provider and re-register as a new CRTP.

CTEC is a most helpful agency.

Your registration was on hold because CTEC could not verify your address. You should be able to renew now. Please double check your address to make sure it is correct.
How can we renew on time without subject to late fee as IRS is delay in renewing PTIN
You can still renew with your old PTIN despite the IRS delay...
Apparently your team is not aware that they are putting CRTPs private information at risk, this site is unsecure we should never have to use our social security numbers to login. This should be protected and it is not. This site shows 6 of the numbers and a thief can take a short time to get the other 3. All of this personal information should never be used for our protection. Please shut that site down and reconfigure as it was in the past with none of our information available to anyone else, like it was in the past, just on file. Sorry to burst the bubble but it is highly unsafe. Any info tech beginner knows this. I implore you to please stop this invasion and exploitation of our privacy.
The social security number requirement is for FTB and IRS enforcement purposes only, which is why CTEC asks for it. CTEC has strict security protocols in place, which cannot be described in detail over the blog. Again, we assure you that our team is experienced with handling sensitive information.
I have been trying to renew, but it does not take my information, I call at 877 and a very polite lady said...Maybe is your computer... try in another one.
If you continue to have troubles renewing, try calling the CTEC office next week again.
When willl CTEC reconfigure the online renewal sign in. It is very unsafe the CRTPs. There social security numbers should never be used for sign. This site is unencrypted, or timed out page. This is breeding ground for identity theft. I understand CTEC is not for the CRTP rights but we are still taxpayers and deserve our protection as well, That is the purpose of the PTIN originally. Please stop putting us at risk.
We understand the concern for identity theft and would never put CRTPs at risk. Protecting your private information is a top priority. CTEC has an experienced team that handles the website data. You can rest assure there are strict protocols in place. Your information is safe.
Thanks.
